Sand Creek - Platte Avenue Grade Control Structure
Owner: City of Colorado Springs
Location: Colorado Springs, CO (Sand Creek @ East Platte Avenue)
Construction Start Date: Mid-October 2008
Superintendent: Jody Lazor, Tezak Heavy Equipment
Job Description: This project consists of the following work: Earthwork (cut & fill), Drop Boulder Structure (Grouted), Rip Rap Bank Armoring, Installation of Steel Sheet Piling, and Erosion Control Measures. On September 11, 2008 a record 4.3 inches of rain was measured at the Colorado Springs Airport, with more falling overnight. By 6:30 a.m. the next morning, the supports for the Platte Avenue Bridges over Sand Creek were so exposed and at risk due to erosion that the bridges were closed to traffic. The City of Colorado Springs had us mobilize on an emergency basis and we constructed a temporary drop structure downstream of the bridge to hold fill material that was placed by Colorado Springs City Crews. We placed a total of 2,500 tons of boulders and rip rap during September 12th and 13th. Thanks to the Colorado Springs City Crews and Tezak Heavy Equipment, the City was able to reopen the Platte Bridges by Monday's morning commute.
