United States Air Force Academy - East Boundary Erosion Control Project

Owner: United States Air Force Academy
Location: Colorado Springs, CO (USAFA)
General Contractor: Toltest, Inc.
Project Superintendent: Jody Lazor, Tezak Heavy Equipment
Construction Start Date: November 2008

Job Background: "Portions of the Monument Branch middle tributary, and Elkhorn Creek on the United States Air Force Academy are being adversely affected by erosion and sedimentation caused by increased stormwater runoff from off-base development. Serious channel down-cutting and head-cutting is degrading wetland and riparian habitats, fragmenting the landscape, exposing underground utilities, and impacting the habitat of a Federally Protected Species (Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse). In support of the mission, stream restoration engineering plans that incorporate more natural features and construction materials have been developed with the objectives of halting and repairing the channel degradation and promoting the restoration of wildlife habitats and aquatic resources." Tezak Heavy Equipment has been contracted by Toltest, Inc. to perform all of the civil work for the east boundary erosion control project.

Black Forest Creek Stabilization Project

Owner: United States Air Force Academy
Location: Colorado Springs, CO (AFA)
Construction Schedule: January of 2008 Through March of 2008
General Contractor: AMEC
Project Manager: Glen Robinson, (AMEC)
Tezak Heavy Equipment Superintendent: Troy W. Adair
Tezak Heavy Equipment Foreman: Jesse Ellis

This project is located in Colorado Springs inside the United States Air Force Academy. "Several streams contributing to Monument Creek are being adversely impacted by erosion and sedimentation caused by increased stormwater runoff from off-base private developments. Serious stream down-cutting is degrading wetland and riparian habitats, fragmenting the landscape, exposing underground utilities, threatining airfield safety, and impacting populations of Federal (Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse) and state-listed (Rocky Mountain Cinquefoil) endangered species. Natural stream restoration projects are planned to stop the channel degradation and restore wildlife habitat resources, but damages are occuring at a pace that requires immediate stabilization of high erosion areas to prevent further impacts and reduce future restoration costs." AMEC has awarded Tezak Heavy Equipment the following construction phases to stop further degredation of the tributary creeks until permanent restoration projects can be implemented.

Phase I: Eastern Tributaries Stream Channel Stabilzation
Phase II: Black Forest Creek Restoration
