Our History

Ed and Danny Tezak

Tezak Heavy Equipment was formed in 1989 by Danny Tezak and his father Ed Tezak, Jr.  Danny bought the business from his father in 1998 and has driven the business to be the most successful it has ever been. Danny's sister, Rhonda Lewis, CPA, came back to work for the family business in the fall of 1999 in the capacity of Vice-President/Controller for the company. Both Danny and Rhonda were raised in the business of highway/heavy construction allowing them to have hands-on and practical knowledge of the construction industry.

Our evolution from humble beginnings to being one of the premier civil contractors in the state of Colorado has been attributable to an old school philosophy where loyalty, honesty, trust and relationships are not just buzz words, but actual corporate values. We are well versed in a variety of procurement and delivery methods including Design/Build, CM/GC (CMAR), Design/Bid/Build, Project Partners, Sole Source/Direct Selection, as well as Long Term Task Order Based Contracts. We understand that there is not a “one size fits all” approach to every project and believe the diversity of our firm allows our resources to be nimble and help Owners achieve their project goals during procurement, design, and construction of their projects.

Tezak Heavy Equipment has extensive experience in highway/heavy construction, mass excavation, urban drainage channel projects, natural river restoration, water resource projects, water and sewer utility installation, and commercial overlot grading. Examples of our projects include, boulder drop structures, riprap placement, landslide repair, high hazard dam rehabilitations, flood mitigation, wetland creation, bridges, box culverts, slip-lining of existing pipes as well as road building and utility installation. We count as our valued clients the following organizations: Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, CDOT, Colorado Springs Utilities, City of Colorado Springs, Pioneer Natural Resources, and many of the local jurisdictions throughout Colorado. We also maintain our Arizona Department of Transportation and Wyoming Department of Transportation qualifications for those instances when the right “niche” project arises that is tailored to our capabilities within that marketplace

Our dynamic team has decades of experience dealing with urban drainage and flood control as well as transportation related projects.  We have obtained and administered all required permits, including 404 permits, CDPHE 401 and 402 permits and other local governmental permits. We have active relationships with many public works jurisdictions throughout Colorado; City of Thornton, City of Aurora, USAFA, the City of Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs Utilities, the City Pueblo, the City of Canon City, the City of Brighton, and many private owners and general contractors, to name a few.

With our belief in being diverse, coupled with our substantial history in being a premier rock excavation contractor, Tezak Heavy Equipment also operates two shot rock quarries in southeastern Colorado.  These quarries have produced a combined 750,000+ tons/year for the last few years, with much of this rock being utilized on our own construction projects. These rock quarries provide the majority of riprap and boulder materials for the southern Colorado markets and have substantial permitted reserves. In addition to servicing our internal needs, these quarries also service outside organizations involved in the production of asphalt and concrete in the Colorado Springs and Pueblo marketplaces.

Tezak takes great pride in constructing a quality project, ahead of schedule, and under budget.  Our belief in partnering with our clients to bring innovative and cost saving ideas to each project forges a strong relationship based upon trust. We challenge our people to “think outside of the box” and be creative in our approach to projects. It is because of these beliefs and high standards that we have forged some very strong relationships and become a “go to” contractor for many of our valued clients. These beliefs are also reinforced by the numerous awards and accolades that our projects have received over the last 2 decades.

All of our upper management personnel are very engaged in all of our business departments and knowledgeable about all aspects of our business. The tenure of our senior managers averages over 15 years, so each manager has the “Tezak Way” ingrained into their thought process and fully understands the standards that have been set within our organization. We believe that our long term relationships are a function of this active engagement between our clients and managers and also understand that these relationships affect our customer’s success, which has a direct correlation to our success.
